In most private and public schools in Mexico, the school year runs from August through to June.  Private schools are recommended over the public government schools.  

Many Mexican parents send their children to school from as early as the age of 2.  If this is not right for either you or your child, just don't do it.  

Before deciding which type of education and school will best suit for your child, take the time well in advance of your intended date to move to Mexico to do/consider the following:

• Plan interviews at the schools well ahead of time, not only for yourself but also for the student.  Older children many want to feel included in the decision and may pick up clues about the school that an adult might miss.
• Review the admissions testing requirements, as not all schools test in the same way or in the same subjects.  
• Make your application early since early-placement and space can be limited at private schools.  
• Check the accreditation of the school and the teachers
• What extra-curricular activities are offered that are important to your and your child?
• Does the school offer bus service to and from where you will live? 
• Check on the location of the school versus the location of your choice of residence.  
• What percentage of the classes are in Spanish and which subjects?
• Is extra Spanish tutoring available if needed?
• Check what textbooks are used.  Are they up-to-date?
• Check the medical facilities and emergency procedures.
